A Cloth Diapering Mystery

A couple of weeks ago, my dear sweet Lily awoke with some blisters on her thigh and it was also quite red. Her diapers have been knocking us over with ammonia smell as well, and were sometimes leaking. We have HIGH expectations of our nighttime diapers because Ms. Lily does pee in copious amounts, and also sleeps 11-13 hours at night. So, the leaking wasn’t necessarily a huge concern because it didn’t happen all the time. However, rash due to ammonia, unacceptable.

So, as I mentioned before, I’m a psycho about my cloth and REALLY hate to ever have to use disposables. It isn’t even because I’m some sort of environmental champion. I just have become such a cloth convert that disposables just really feel wrong. Anyhow, we felt it was best to put her in sposies and treat the rash and also give us time to scope out the best solution for cloth for nighttime.

I am happy to report that the disposables designed for nighttime use failed miserably. I’m happy about it because it reaffirmed my belief that cloth is superior and I didn’t want anything to shake that belief. We had to change a lot of sheets for the few days we used those darned things.

I took an interesting turn in my research. I have always gone low tech with my cloth, preferring prefolds during the day, and fitteds with extra soakers at night. However, my fitteds were failing and stinking. I turned to my cloth diapering friends, and they came back with pockets as a solution. I had avoided pockets like the plague because I had read about so many moms who had issues with them. So, I decided to give them a try.

These are Bum Genius 3.0 One Size pockets. They come with two microfiber inserts.

Bingo! They work like a charm!! We have had zero leaks, and a greatly reduced ammonia smell in the morning. Her skin is looking great and I couldn’t be happier! I am hoping that this continues to work well, because I really like them!
