Perfect, Just Perfect
As you know, I have a Wii Fit. The exercise I enjoy the most with it is the step aerobics. It doesn’t have any particularly challenging step combinations, so it is a great way for me to get some aerobic activity in without feeling like I am auditioning for the next hip-hop revolution.
But, there is one thing that this particular exercise does that gets me down. When you step on the board, if you do it in the right timing and of course in the right order, it flashes PERFECT. If you are a little ahead or behind with timing, then you get an OK. Of course if you miss the step altogether, your little square doesn’t light up and it goes dark. At the end of the session, it tells you how many PERFECTS, OK’s and misses you got and calculates your score. So, of course, lately my goal has been to get an all PERFECT session.
But, then I thought, that is the reason why I have failed so many times in the past. PERFECT doesn’t exist. There will always, and I really mean, ALWAYS be something that gets in the way. You planned the PERFECT dinner and the husband shows up late. You were going to exercise 5 days this week and a kid gets sick. Someone brought donuts to the office and you had one and now your PERFECT diet is ruined. You slaved to clean the floor and the dog tracks mud on it 2 minutes later.
So, you have an option. In the past, with the donut incident, I would have said, “Well crap, now I can’t be perfect, and so I might as well throw in the towel.” That usually leads to thinking like, “Well, I’ve already screwed up this week, so I guess I’ll just restart on Monday.” and then that leads to something bad happening on Monday and so you never lose a pound, all because you couldn’t stand to be less than PERFECT!
Now, I realize that OK is really great! OK means, “I’m doing it! I’m making progress! I’m making better choices!”
PERFECT is unattainable and ridiculous, really. Because of sin, the idea of PERFECT is preposterous. In this life there just isn’t any hope for us to ever attain it.
But, I rejoice in this today: “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ: even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and PERFECT before him in love.” (Ephesians 1:3-4
Praise God that because of Jesus we ARE PERFECT in His sight.
Now, back to the Wii to rejoice in being OK.
