Making Babyfood
I love to make Lil’s food. It is so easy and so much cheaper than buying the jarred food in most cases. It also makes me feel good to know that I know exactly what she is getting. Here’s an example of how I make her food:
Start with fresh or frozen fruit and vegetables. In today’s example I’ll be making butternut squash:

Cut the stem end off of the squash and then cut in half length wise.

Place the squash cut side down in a dish that has a couple of inches of water in it. Make like you are on the set of “Psycho” and slash the skin of your squash a dozen times or so. Microwave for 12-14 minutes or until flesh is tender.

Scoop flesh out of the skin with a spoon and place in your preferred blending device. I am using a food processor here, but you can use a blender too.

Blend until desired consistency. You may need to add liquid to achieve this. I try to use the water in which the veggie or fruit cooked in so that there are added nutrients that way, but you can use just plain water or juice or broth, depending on what you’re making.

Then, pour your puree into an ice cube tray. Cover with plastic wrap and freeze.

Next, pop the cubes out of the tray and put into a labeled zip top bag. (Yeah, I know the bag says Mango on it, I forgot to take a picture of the squash bag. ) When you’re ready to use, just either pop into a pan on the stove to reheat or use the microwave. Just make sure to stir thoroughly to get rid of any hot spots and test to be sure it isn’t too hot.
